I think inventing LED displays was a mistake. We had the ability to make our monitors weigh 40 pounds and make big juicy BDUMMMMM noises when we degaussed them and now I see frame rates too high and 60 fps looks slow to me.

I can no longer put a giant magnet in front of a CRT to look at funny patterns so now I have to use those giant magnets on the nearest synth instead.

It’s just not the same, man.

Fun fact: this is my second most used keyboard. It has zero buttons.

So how this works: It’s a USB keyboard. It’s also a serial port.

I have a program that can send it a message on the serial port and it’ll push keys.

See, this thing shouldn’t be needed. There’s supposed to be APIs to let you do this entirely in software: But ever since Windows 10, they haven’t been reliable. You can use a method and it’ll work 95% of the time but then it turns out the 5% of the time it doesn’t work includes the one game/emulator you need to hack.

But a USB keyboard? A USB keyboard always works. No matter what program you’re targeting. So I use this device for all my keyboard emulation.

Like just today I was hacking on Super Princess Peach for the DS. I have a script that injects new text into the ROM, and I need to press some keys in the emulator to make it reload a savestate then push some buttons to get to the next screen. I could do it with the native key APIs… or I could plug in my serial-keyboard and just tell it to push “F1” “X” and it’ll 100% work.
